Why does the breaker trip? 5 common causes

A breaker that trips is doing its job: protecting your installation. Never force it back up or replace it with a higher-rated one without an inspection.

1. Circuit overload. Too many devices running at once on the same circuit, especially ones that generate heat (shower, iron, oven).

2. Short circuit. An exposed wire or a loose connection makes direct contact. Usually comes with sparks or a burning smell.

3. Ground fault. Current escapes toward metal parts. It's dangerous because it can cause electrocution.

4. Worn-out breaker. Over the years they lose precision and trip for no real reason.

5. Damaged appliance. Try unplugging devices one by one to identify the culprit.

If it trips repeatedly or there's a burning smell, cut the power and call an electrician. That's a sign of real risk.
